Three vertebrae, unearthed from the banks of the Fukami River in Kyushu, Japan, sparked a scientific journey that would challenge conventional wisdom.
Unveiling the Past: A Fossil Collector's Find
In the late 1990s, a fossil collector named Eiichi Kitabayashi made a remarkable discovery. While exploring the Fukami River, he recovered three salamander vertebrae, remnants of an ancient lakeland that existed approximately 3.5 million years ago.
The significance of these bones became apparent when a team from Kyoto University decided to take a closer look. Using micro-CT scanning, they revealed intricate internal details that had eluded previous examinations.
A New Genus Unveiled
The mid-trunk vertebra, in particular, held the key to a remarkable discovery. Its unique features, including a compact profile and flared joints, did not align with any known giant salamander species, extinct or living.
The team named this new genus Limnospondylus ajimuensis, a name that pays homage to its lake-dwelling nature and the site of its discovery. "Ajimu contains the only site in the world where fossils of the giant salamander family and extant genera have both been found," explained lead author Masahiro Noda.
Size and Age: Unraveling the Life of a Giant
Estimating the size of this ancient salamander based on the largest vertebra, the team calculated a body length of approximately 3.6 feet (1.1 meters). This estimate, while provisional, provides a glimpse into the dimensions of this prehistoric creature.
Furthermore, growth rings within the bone suggest that the salamander was around 17 or 18 years old, with steady growth indicating a healthy and thriving individual.
A Lost Habitat: The Lakes of Kyushu
The Kyushu of this salamander's time was a vastly different place. Wide, freshwater lakes dominated the lowlands, surrounded by marshes and forests. The climate was warm and humid, providing an ideal habitat for giant salamanders, which thrive in regions with ample rainfall.
The presence of unusual neighbors, such as Stegodon elephants, rhinos, and alligators, highlights the unique blend of northern and tropical fauna that inhabited this ancient landscape.
The Fate of a Genus: Adaptation and Survival
As the world cooled approximately 2.6 million years ago, the warm and humid conditions that favored the lake-dwelling giant salamanders began to change. Lakes and wetlands started to shrink, dealing a fatal blow to these amphibians.
In contrast, their river-dwelling relative, Andrias japonicus, the Japanese giant salamander, persevered. This species, still swimming in the Fukami River today, serves as a living link to the deep past, a testament to the resilience of certain species in the face of environmental shifts.
The Legacy of Giant Salamanders
Before this discovery, only five genera of giant salamanders were known, combining living and extinct species. This new genus, Limnospondylus ajimuensis, expands our understanding of these creatures, challenging the notion of monotony within this group.
Many giant salamander fossils have been classified under the genus Andrias due to a lack of better alternatives. Some of these, the authors suggest, may represent unrecognized species, waiting to be properly identified.
